Proceedings of the National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency’s Stakeholders forum held on 22nd November, 2012 at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria.


In pursuit of the realization of Mr. President’s national transformational agenda as it concerns the minerals and metals sector, a stakeholder’s forum was organized by the National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency on Thursday 22nd November, 2012 at the man hall of the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja. The main objective of the forum was to create an interactive session for key players in the mineral and metal sector and to highlight the importance of exploration in sustainable mineral development. The forum attracted participants from the Government, academia and the private sector.

Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion are

Ø  The Executive Governor of Katsina State who was represented by his Deputy Governor served as the Special Guest of Honor.


Ø  The Head of Service of the Federation, Alh. Isa Bello Sali, CFR, who declared the forum open.


Ø  The Honorable Minister Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Arc. Musa Mohammed Sada, FNMGS, FNIA who was the Chief Host.

Ø  The Chairman Senate Committee on Power and Steel Development and Metallurgy, Senator Phillip Aduda.


Ø  The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Mines and Steel Development Mr. Linus Awute, MNI.



Ø  The President Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Mr. Akinola George, FNMGS.


The programme started with the opening prayer.

A welcome address was delivered by Mr. A.A. Ohikere, Director General/Chief Executive of the National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency: who spoke on “Filling the Gap Between Mineral Discovery and Exploration: The Role of NSRMEA”, his address highlights the importance of mineral exploration and the efforts made so far by the Agency in achieving its objectives. The Director Generals address was followed by those of the Head of Service, represented by Dr Oyemomi and the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari who represented his Excellency Dr Ibrahim Shehu Shema. The Chief Host Honorable Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Musa Mohammed Sada FNIA, FNMGS, then delivered his address.


The keynote address was presented by Prof M.A. Rahman of the Dept of Geology Obafemi Awolowo University on “Mineral Exploration: Key to National Development and Economic Transformation”.


Goodwill messages were offered by various stakeholders and a vote of thanks by the Perm Sec of MMSD. Tour of exhibition was led by the DG/CE which was followed by tea break.


At the technical session which was chaired by Mr. Orunmuyi, four technical papers were presented as follows:


1st paper was presented by Prof O.B. Oluchi of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Abuja. The Challenges of Utilizing Nigeria’s Oolotic Iron Ore in Steel Making. An overview.


2nd paper, Dr Sanusi A. Mohammed, Secretary General African Iron & Steel Association, Abuja. Titled “DEVELOPMENT OF STEEL INDUSTRY: AN IMPERATIVE FOR ACHIEVEMENT OF VISION 20:2020


3rd paper, Dr D.E Muidare presented his paper on “In Line With Government Economic Diversification Agenda, What option for Oil.


4th paper was delivered by Engr. B.O. Nwude Consulting Mining Engineer on the “Sourcing  for Coal for Sustainable Production and Power generation in Nigeria”  where he outlined coal formation and its various grades, the current available reserve, its economic viability and industrial relevance.


Finally, contributions were made by participants and stakeholders. The Communiqué was read by Mr. Chidi Imo Head of Coal and Industrial Minerals. While the final vote of thanks was given by Dr. Frank Onike.
